Facts about the Program

History

The Health Services Concentration was initiated in 1988 to respond to the complex educational, social, political, economic, managerial, and technological problems of service delivery in contemporary urban society. The Health Services Concentration emphasized a strong research curriculum and began producing Health Services Researchers since that was what students, the community and the health field needed.

By spring, 2003, the Health Services Concentration had graduated 37 students. These alumni have been able to obtain research, faculty and health administration positions all over the country and the world. They also have an impressive array of success in publications, scholarly presentations, and funded grants. At that time, permission was sought to change the name of the program in order to better identify the academic skills being taught. The name change occurred in 2005 and the Old Dominion University Health Services Research program was born. The program continues to attract a remarkable contingent of qualified students about a third of which are full time and two-thirds part time. There are always several international students in the program as well as local, regional and national applicants. The quality of the students coupled with the dedication of the faculty has allowed students to build skills and become competitive in the job market for Health Services Research PhD’s.
