Carline Jean-Giles, FNP PhD
Dr. Jean-Gilles received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida International University in 1993, her Master of Science in Community Health Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate from University of Virginia in 1997, and her Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008. She was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and has resided in the United States for over 30 years.
Dr. Jean-Gilles is very committed to the area of health promotion and disease prevention. She teaches graduate courses particularly in the area of Psychosocial Assessment of Families NURS 714 and Health Promotion NURS 663.These courses introduce graduate level students to the theoretical underpinnings and practice of individual and family. Additionally, cultural issues and health disparities that influence patient care are discussed. One of her goals is to prepare nurses and colleagues from various disciplines to become excellent clinicians and researchers in this area. Dr. Jean-Gilles has served as a consultant for developing and evaluating cultural competency programs and developed a chapter focused on cultural competency and HIV care for the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center. She maintains her clinical expertise through her memberships in the following associations: Sigma Theta Tau International Society, American Public Health Association, Women's Research Society, and the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.
Dr. Jean-Gilles considers community service and research in community settings as her area of practice. An important component of her work is reaching out and building partnerships to improve the quality of life of various racial/ethnic groups and communities. For the past five years, she has been actively involved with various community-based organizations regarding issues in minority health, especially in the area of AIDS. She has also worked with the National Minority and the Pennsylvania/Mid-Atlantic AIDS Education and Training center to educate community leaders to implement theory based, evidenced-based, culturally sensitive HIV prevention projects in communities of color. Noted for her expertise in cultural competency, HIV and women, and building community partnerships to promote healthy behaviors, she is invited to travel across the country to educate other healthcare providers in various communities on this topic.
Dr. Jean-Gilles research interests include health disparities in communities of color; AIDS education of health care professionals; and HIV early intervention in communities disproportionately affected.
