Clinical Placements for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing
Welcome to Nursing 350/351 - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. I am Phyllis Eaton and am the course coordinator for this course and for Community Health Nursing which I will also discuss with you. This course is offered in junior year in the fall semester for traditional students and in the summer semester for the accelerated students.
Nurs 351
Nursing 351 is the clinical aspect of Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing. It is a one credit course and has 36 hours of required clinical hours. This means that the student will have clinical one day a week for six weeks (either the first half of the semester or the second half of the semester). The clinical sites we currently use are: Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center; Sentara Norfolk General Hospital; Maryview Behavioral Health Center; and Riverside Peninsula Behavioral Health. Students are required to wear their community nursing uniform (polo shirt and slacks).
Nurs 471
Nursing 470/471 is Community Health Nursing. This course is a two semester course which you will take during your final fall and spring semesters. This course has two components, which are lecture and clinical. The lecture portion of the class is usually for two hours every other week. The clinical portion of the course consists of 36 clinical hours. During your clinical component you will work with a local community organization, planning and implementing a variety of health teaching pieces.
At the end of the spring semester rising senior students have the opportunity to view presentations offered by the current senior community health students. These presentations showcase their community health projects. The rising seniors then have the opportunity to choose their community health site for next year. The community health sites are based on the Old Dominion University School of Nursing philosophy of promoting health through community partnerships. The School of Nursing currently partners with a variety of organizations and institutions, such as elderly low income housing; Consortium for Infant and Child Health; Norfolk Drug Court; and Sentara Health and Prevention. The clinical uniform for this course is the community nursing uniform (polo shirt and slacks).
