Dress Code

Hello, welcome to ODU School of Nursing. My name is Kim Curry Lourenco. I am the course coordinator for Nurs 320/Adult Health I, which you will take during the first semester of your junior year. However, I you will also work with me in various sophomore level skills labs and clinical courses across the curriculum.

DRESS CODE

I would like to share some important information about the dress code in classrooms and clinical settings. An important aspect of your baccalaureate nursing education is the transition from student to professional nurse. As a representative of ODU, your appearance should convey competence and professionalism as you interact with faculty, peers, patients and health care providers in the local community. For this reason, adherence to dress code requirements is a core component of grading criteria in lab and clinical courses.

All students, male and female, will be responsible for knowing and following the School of Nursing dress code requirements. To speak frankly, the expectation is that no boobs, butts, brawn or belly buttons (or fractions thereof) may be exposed. Be sure to read the student handbook www.odu.edu/nursson for a detailed description of dress code for classroom, lab and clinical settings.

UNIFORMS

ODU School of Nursing Uniforms, including shoes, will be purchased through Med-Emporium. Information regarding fitting dates and delivery dates is included in the Summer student information letter. Uniforms will be needed for in-hospital clinical practice beginning the first week after spring break - March 2010. Students will need to purchase several ODU School of Nursing patches to sew onto the laboratory coat and uniforms. Patches are $2.00 each and are available from Ann McNeal, Health Sciences Building, Room 2134. In addition, students are expected to wear white, black, or nude undergarments relative to skin tone with uniforms. Solid white hose are worn with dress/skirt uniforms; white hose or socks are required with pant uniforms. Hose and socks may be purchased anywhere.

LAB KITS:

You will be required to by a lab kit. The kit includes equipment necessary for laboratory use in Nursing 302 (Fall semester), 303 (Spring semester), 321 & 341 in junior level semesters. Kits will be delivered to the School of Nursing on the first day of fall classes where they will be available for student pick-up.
