The University Honor Code, Plagiarism, APA Style

Hello - My name is Denise Isibel and in the pre licensure BSN curriculum I teach Nursing Leadership and Management. I also work with students in the clinical area in the sophomore and junior years. I am looking forward to working with you as you progress through the ODU BSN degree requirements.

Honor Code

The School of Nursing follows the University's Honor Code System. The Honor Code is in place to ensure academic and personal integrity. There are many academic demands and challenges placed on you within the program. The faculty expect every nursing student to practice with self-respect and honesty. More information regarding the University Honor Code can be found on the Honor Council website. You will also find a copy of the Honor Pledge can be found on page 15 of the School of Nursing Handbook. This honor pledge which is to be written and signed on each and every assignment turned in for credit is also found within the course syllabi for each course.

Lying, cheating and plagiarism are obvious violations of the honor code. Others that might not seem so obvious are team collaboration unless the instructor allows that. Claiming to have the done the work on group project, Using ready made papers from others or off the Internet. The same applies if you use these papers and change a "few words", Failing to use correct references, or exceeding the use of allowable notes during an exam if given the opportunity.

Penalties for an Honor Code violation can rage from disciplinary probation, grade sanctions or expulsion from the University.

One of the Core Values is Professionalism. Academic Honesty is critical to Professionalism. If you ever have a question or concern about violations to the honor code please do not hesitate to talk to one of the faculty about your concerns. We are always will to assist.

Plagiarism

A difficult issue you may wrestle with in the honor code is plagiarism. While studying within the School of Nursing you will continue to refine your written work, adhere to all copyright and plagiarism rules.

Some examples of plagiarism are:

  • Submitting a paper from a professional source like the Internet
  • Leaving our quotation marks even though you have provided proper documentation of your source
  • Turning in a paper someone else has written for you
  • Taking credit for a group project when you did none of the group work

When in doubt ask your professor. It never hurts to over-cite if you are unsure as well.

APA format

The papers you submit to the school of nursing will follow the American Psychological Association writing style. This is what we refer to as APA format. There is a text published by the APA to assist you with all the intricacies called the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition. This is a required text for all courses within the School of Nursing. During the curriculum you will find yourself becoming very familiar with the use of APA format, as it is expected for each and every assignment.
