Nursing Electives

My name is Linda K. Bennington and in the pre licensure BSN curriculum I teach Family Centered Maternity Care; Clinical Management of Family Centered Maternity Care; Role Transition Clinicals, Community Health Clinicals and an occasional elective. In the post licensure BSN curriculum I teach occasional electives. I am looking forward to working with you as you progress through the ODU BSN degree requirements.

I want provide you information about nursing electives. Each student in the pre licensure BSN curriculum must complete at least one nursing elective. We offer nursing electives under Nursing 358 for two credits. The courses are listed in the curriculum guide for the last semester of the six-semester schedule. Students may, however, elect to complete the nursing elective earlier than the last semester.

Nursing electives are courses that provide insight into areas of nursing not elaborated on in the regular curriculum or provide an in-depth investigation of a specific content area. Some of these courses include: Death and Dying/Palliative Care; Genetics; Complementary Alternative Medicine; Women's Health; Spirituality in Nursing; Institute of Medicine's Procedures for Medical Errors; Professional Nursing Issues; Cardiovascular Nursing. Only selected options are available in the spring and summer semesters. The aim of electives is to provide a broader scope of the vision of nursing from where it has been to where it is going.

Additional Options:

  1. The Spanish Department offers Spanish 195: Spanish for Healthcare Providers in spring semester. This 3-credit course may be substituted for Nursing 358 and is an excellent choice to learn how to communicate healthcare terminology in Spanish. The prerequisite is high school Spanish.
  2. Nursing 395 - Independent Study (2 credits) allows a student who has secured a summer "externship" to use the summer nursing experience in place of a nursing elective. There are specific course requirements for this type of nursing elective. Students must have permission of the listed instructor prior to enrolling.
