Student Nurses' Association
Hello, I am Suzanne Van Orden and am the faculty representative of the Student Nurses' Association. I also coordinate your two sophomore level Nursing Theory courses, N300 and 301. I will also work with you in pediatric clinical courses [Nurs 421].
The Student Nurses' Association is a student run professional organization that strives to organize, represent, and mentor students preparing for initial licensure as Registered Nurses as well as those nurses enrolled in baccalaureate completion programs. SNA activities and events provide opportunities to promote development of skills that students will need as responsible and accountable members of the nursing profession and advocates for high quality health care. Active membership entails annual dues payment, attendance at one meeting per semester, and participation in a minimum of one community service event per semester. In addition to dues paid by members, SNA membership holds fundraisers such as a School of Nursing apparel sale and bake sales to support its efforts.
The SNA sponsors a variety of volunteer events that center on aspects of health care or building the ODU community. During the academic year such events have included participation and/or assistance with a Multiple Sclerosis Walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run, Relay for Life, Adopt a Spot, Polar Plunge, Habitat for Humanity, DePaul's Day of Dance for Heart Health, and other community service endeavors.
The organization also promotes the profession of nursing and specifically the School of Nursing at ODU through the efforts of the "Break Through to Nursing" officer positions. This year these officers attended TCC's College Fair, Salem High School's College Fair, Madison's High School's Health Fair, King's Fork College Night, and ODU's Annual Health Fair. Members donated 650 hours of community service in the past academic year. In an effort to further explore the profession of nursing outside of the classroom and clinical experiences, SNA invites to campus professional guest speakers representing a variety of professional nurse roles.
