Technical Standards
Students admitted to the physical therapy program can be expected to complete requirements that necessitate the skills listed below:
- Assimilate large amounts of material communicated through lectures, discussions, readings, demonstrations and practice.
- Comprehend and apply mathematical principles for statistical concepts as well as comprehending and solving clinical problems.
- Comprehend and apply abstract concepts from biological, sociological and psychological sciences.
- Communicate effectively orally and prepare written documents that are correct in style, grammar, mechanics and organization.
- Read charts and records related to patient care in whatever format presented.
- Distinguish changes in temperature and texture implied in palpation of body tissues, to detect edema and other such physical characteristics related to evaluation activities in the practice setting.
- Safely perform patient transfers and gait activities.
- Safely implement evaluation procedures, application of physical modalities and other treatment procedures relevant to physical therapy practice.
- Establish interpersonal rapport and relate to individuals, families and community groups who have a wide variety of social, emotional, intellectual and cultural differences.
