Technical Standards

Students admitted to the physical therapy program can be expected to complete requirements that necessitate the skills listed below:

  1. Assimilate large amounts of material communicated through lectures, discussions, readings, demonstrations and practice.
  2. Comprehend and apply mathematical principles for statistical concepts as well as comprehending and solving clinical problems.
  3. Comprehend and apply abstract concepts from biological, sociological and psychological sciences.
  4. Communicate effectively orally and prepare written documents that are correct in style, grammar, mechanics and organization.
  5. Read charts and records related to patient care in whatever format presented.
  6. Distinguish changes in temperature and texture implied in palpation of body tissues, to detect edema and other such physical characteristics related to evaluation activities in the practice setting.
  7. Safely perform patient transfers and gait activities.
  8. Safely implement evaluation procedures, application of physical modalities and other treatment procedures relevant to physical therapy practice.
  9. Establish interpersonal rapport and relate to individuals, families and community groups who have a wide variety of social, emotional, intellectual and cultural differences.
